CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine

About CSIR-IIIM

Overview

Established in 1941 as the Drug Research Laboratory of J&K State, the institute began as a research and production centre. In December 1957, it was taken over by the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India, and renamed the Regional Research Laboratory, Jammu. In 2007, reflecting its expertise in natural product-based drug discovery, the institute was redefined as the Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM), with a mission to discover new drugs and therapeutic approaches from natural products, leveraging biotechnology. Today, IIIM develops high-value technologies, drugs, and products for national and international markets.

Leadership

Mission

To become a center of excellence in natural product chemistry and biotechnology-driven drug discovery, integrating modern biology with chemistry.

Vision

To position IIIM as an international center of excellence in natural product chemistry, chemical biology, pharmacology, and biotechnology. IIIM aims to discover new chemical entities (NCEs) to address unmet medical needs while providing scientific validation for Indian systems of medicine. The institute aspires to lead in building a robust knowledge base, training a dedicated workforce of scientists, and developing technologies through the exploration of secondary metabolites from plants and microbial biodiversity. Conservation and protection of these resources remain a core focus.

Mandate

IIIM operates as an internationally competitive center of excellence in natural products research and technology with key objectives:

Drug Discovery

Identifying novel pharmacologically active natural products from plants and microbial species, translating them into drug leads and candidates via medicinal chemistry, preclinical pharmacology, and clinical development.

Indian Systems of Medicine

Preclinical and clinical validation of drugs used in Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, and other indigenous systems, including establishing mechanisms of action.

Agro-Technologies

Developing and commercializing cultivation practices for high-value medicinal and aromatic plants from the Western Himalayas, including Kashmir Valley and Ladakh, for global markets.

Industry Collaboration

Partnering with Indian and global pharmaceutical industries to out-license new products and technologies.

IIIM’s integrated approach combines science, innovation, and technology, contributing to advancements in healthcare and sustainable development.
